Updating the Desktop App

How to update to the most recent version of the Desktop App

The Monograph Desktop App checks for updates automatically. Depending on how important the update is, you'll see one of two messages regarding required or recommended update. Continue reading to learn more.

"Update required" vs. "Update recommended"

Update required (blocking): Occasionally, an update is mandatory — usually when an older version of the app can no longer connect securely to Monograph. When this happens, the app opens an update screen and you'll need to update before continuing to use the Desktop App. The screen shows your current version and the version you need to reach, and you can still open Settings while it's displayed.

Update recommended (non-blocking): Most updates are optional. You can keep working normally, and the app will let you know an update is available with a notification dot on the Settings icon and an alert in Settings. You can update whenever it's convenient.

In both cases, if you have a timer running or Smart Time Tracking active when you choose to update, the app saves your timer and stops tracking before restarting, so no tracked time is lost.

How to check your current app version

Your Desktop App version is displayed in the app footer. After an update completes and the app restarts, the version shown there updates automatically. If you see an "Update required" screen, it will also show your current version alongside the required one.

How to Update

To update the Desktop App, follow the steps below:

  1. Click Update (or Restart) from the update screen or the Settings alert. The app downloads the new version — you'll see an "Installing updates" screen while this happens.

  2. The app restarts itself once the update is installed. No manual reinstall is needed — the updater replaces the app in place.

If the in-app updater fails, download the latest installer manually and install it over your existing app:

  • macOS: download the .dmg installer, open it, and drag Monograph into your Applications folder (replacing the old copy).

  • Windows: run the downloaded installer, which will upgrade your existing installation.

Your sign-in and settings are preserved — you won't need to set anything up again after updating.

💡 Update messages apply only to the Desktop App. You can continue using Monograph on your mobile device at any time, regardless of your Desktop App version.

Troubleshooting Checklist

If the update won't download or install, try these steps in order:

  1. Restart the Desktop App and check Settings again for the update alert.

  2. Re-download the installer for your operating system and install it manually (see above).

  3. Contact your IT team if you're on a managed computer — installers may require administrator approval or may be blocked by your organization's software policies.

  4. Still stuck? Contact our Support Team and include:

    • Your operating system (macOS or Windows, and version)

    • Your Desktop App version (from the app footer)

    • A screenshot of the update message or error you're seeing
